Ready-Made Designs vs Custom Swimwear Manufacturing
Private label

Private label vs custom swimwear is the decision that shapes your budget, your launch date and how much risk you carry into your first season. Private label means starting from styles that already exist and putting your name on them. Custom means developing your own design from a pattern up. Both can build a real brand. They just cost different amounts of money and time.
We offer both at Istanbul Swimwear Studio, so this guide isn't about selling you one route. It's about showing the real numbers so you can choose the one that fits your stage.
You choose from twelve ready-developed bikini and swimsuit styles that are already patterned, fitted and graded in sizes XS–XL, in two fit groups. You pick colours from our in-stock 80/20 polyamide-elastane fabric in matte, shiny or neon quality, or choose one of our ready prints. We produce them with your brand labels, hygiene stickers and individual packaging. Tops and bottoms are sold separately, so you can build combinations without increasing your piece count.
You bring your own design: a tech pack, or detailed sketches with key measurements and reference photos. We make the pattern, cut and sew a sample, refine the fit with you, and then produce it under your label. The silhouette, construction and details are yours.

Here's what one style in one colour costs on each route, before freight and duties:
Private label Custom, basic Custom, premium
Development fee €0 €500 €500
100 pcs × unit price €2,300 (€23) €2,000–2,500 €4,500–5,000
Total €2,300 €2,500–3,000 €5,000–5,500
Effective cost per piece €23 €25–30 €50–55
On a single basic style, the gap is smaller than most founders expect: often €2–7 per piece. It grows quickly when you multiply it across a collection. Four custom styles (or four bikini sets) mean €2,000 in development fees alone, plus any extra sample rounds, before production starts.
A custom style is only as good as the information behind it. Before development starts, you need to be ready to decide:
Every round of changes after the first sample adds cost and time. Founders who arrive with a clear tech pack usually approve in one or two rounds; those who arrive with a mood board need more.
1. Is this your first season? Without sales data, private label lets you learn which shapes and colours your customers buy, at the lowest cost.
2. When do you need stock on the rail? If launch is less than three months away, custom is very tight. Private label fits.
3. Is the silhouette itself your selling point? If your brand is built around a cut nobody else offers, custom is worth the investment.
4. How many styles do you need?
What Is a Good MOQ for a New Swimwear Brand?
5. Can you afford a slower first sell-through? Custom pieces carry more cost per piece and need longer to pay back.
You don't have to choose one route forever. Many brands launch with three or four ready-to-brand styles, learn which shapes and colours sell, and then develop one custom hero piece for season two, built on real data instead of a guess. Because both routes share the same MOQ and the same fabric base, the collection still looks and feels consistent.
Why Sell Other Brands When You Could Sell Your Own?
So You Want to Build an Influencer Brand?
Over three decades of producing for European brands, we've seen many first collections start with six or eight original designs. The ones that struggled rarely had bad designs; they ran out of time and budget in sampling, and launched late with too little stock in the styles that sold. The brands that grew usually did something simpler: they built most of the collection on standardised, proven styles and added one or two original pieces of their own. That mix gives a brand its own identity while saving both time and budget, and it leaves room to reorder the styles that sell.
Private label uses the manufacturer's existing, already-fitted styles with your branding. Custom swimwear is developed from your own design, with a new pattern and sample. At Istanbul Swimwear Studio, both start from 100 pieces per style per colour.
Our development fee is €500 per style, covering the pattern and one sample; a bikini set (top and bottom) counts as one style. It is paid before work starts and isn't deducted from the order. Production then costs €20–25 per piece for basic styles and €45–50 for premium styles, FOB Istanbul.
Plan for at least 12 weeks from first contact to launch: development and sampling first, then 4–6 weeks of production after the final sample is approved. Private label orders take 4–6 weeks of production from the deposit.
Yes. Ready-to-Brand styles are produced with your brand labels, hygiene stickers and individual packaging, from €14 per piece and 100 pieces per style per colour.
Yes, and it's the route we recommend for most first-time brands. Both routes share the same minimum order and fabric base, so new custom pieces sit naturally next to your existing styles.
