What Is a Good MOQ for a New Swimwear Brand? (And How Many Styles Should You Launch With?)

When people decide to start a swimwear brand, the first questions are usually about money: How many pieces do I have to order? What will it cost? Those are the right questions. But there are two more that matter just as much, and that most first-time founders get wrong:

  • Which styles should I launch with?
  • How many styles do I really need?

In this article we answer all three, based on what we see every season working with new brands, boutiques and creators across Europe.

First, Let's Clear Up a Common Myth: A Brand Is Not a New Design

Many new founders believe that launching a brand means inventing a completely new product. So they spend months sketching, searching for a factory that will develop ten original styles, and burning their budget before a single piece is sold.

Here is the honest truth from the factory floor: in swimwear, there are only so many shapes. A triangle bikini, a bandeau, a balconette top, a high-leg brief, a classic one-piece, a cut-out swimsuit. Look closely at most swimwear brands in Europe and you'll see many of the same base silhouettes again and again.

What makes those brands different is not a revolutionary cut. It's:

  • Fit: how the piece feels on the body

Fabric

Polyester vs. Polyamide

  • Colour: the palette people associate with your name
  • Details: trims, hardware, labels, packaging
  • Story: who the brand is for and why it exists

A brand is a promise and a point of view, not just a product. You can build a strong one on proven styles.

What Is a Good MOQ for a New Swimwear Brand?

MOQ (minimum order quantity) is the smallest number of pieces a manufacturer will produce for one style. Traditional factories often ask for 300–1,000 pieces per style, sometimes per colour. For a new brand, that's too much risk.

For a first collection, 100 pieces per style per colour is a healthy MOQ. It's large enough to be produced efficiently and professionally, and small enough to sell through in one season without a warehouse full of unsold stock.

MOQ per style What it means for a new brand

30–50 pcs Very low risk, but often higher unit cost and limited fabric options. Mostly for samples or tests.

100 pcs The sweet spot: affordable, testable, enough stock for a real launch.

300–500 pcs Makes sense once you have sales data and reorders.

1,000+ pcs Established brands with proven demand and wholesale channels.

A quick note on how MOQs are counted: at Istanbul Swimwear Studio, the minimum is 100 pieces per style per colour. Two styles in one colour each means 200 pieces; one style in two colours also means 200 pieces. Sizes can be mixed freely within those 100.

How 100 pieces actually break down

Remember that 100 pieces are split across sizes. A typical size curve for a European market looks like this:

Size XS S M L XL

Pieces 10 25 30 25 10

So "100 pieces" really means about 25–30 pieces in your best-selling sizes. That's why going below 100 often leaves you with too few pieces where you need them most.

How Much Does It Cost to Manufacture Swimwear?

How Many Styles Should a New Swimwear Brand Launch With?

Ten styles feels like a "real" collection. But ten styles × 100 pieces, even in a single colour each, is 1,000 pieces of stock, a big investment, and very hard to market well in your first season.

Our recommendation: launch with 4–6 styles. A tight capsule is easier to photograph, easier to explain on social media, easier to sell through, and it teaches you much more about your customer. In practice, that's 400–600 pieces if you launch each style in one colour, which is why most brands start with one colour per style and add colourways on reorder.

The Launch Plan We'd Choose: Proven Styles + Your Signature Looks

If we were launching a swimwear brand today, this is exactly what we would do:

1. Start with 3–4 proven styles from a manufacturer's existing collection. These are styles that have already been developed, fitted and sold in the market. You choose the colour and fit group, and they're produced with your own labels and branding. Since patterns and fit are already approved, development time and risk are much lower, and at Istanbul Swimwear Studio you can order them from 100 pieces per style per colour.

2. Make 1–2 looks unmistakably yours. Your signature doesn't have to be a new pattern. Because tops and bottoms are sold separately, you can pair them in combinations no one else offers, build a colour story around one or two hero shades, and choose the fit group that matches your customer. Add your own labels and branding, and those pieces become the ones people associate with your name.

Why not start with all-original designs?

Because this is where most new brands get stuck. Developing your own designs means pattern making, several rounds of sampling, fit corrections, sometimes custom fabric or print development, and each of these steps can have its own minimum. Finding a manufacturer willing to do all this for a small first order is genuinely difficult. Many factories will simply say no, or quote prices that make the project unrealistic.

By building your launch on proven styles, you keep your budget and timeline under control, and put your energy into what customers actually notice: colour, fit, styling and story. If you later want a fully original silhouette, you can develop it once your first collection has given you real sales data.

How to Grow From There: Season by Season

A brand is built over seasons, not in one launch.

Stage What to do

Season 1: Launch 4–6 styles, 100 pcs each per colour. Build your audience, collect reviews and photos, watch which sizes and colours sell first.

Season 1: Reorder Reorder your best-sellers quickly. Drop or rework what didn't sell.

Season 2: Expand Add 2–3 new styles from the collection or new colourways of your winners. Increase quantities on proven pieces.

Season 3 and beyond

developing original designs

Every season you'll know more, and every new style you add will be based on real sales data rather than guesses.

Quick Guide: Who Should Start How?

You are… Suggested first launch

A boutique owner 3–4 proven styles in your customers' most-asked shapes, sold alongside your existing brands.

An influencer or creator 3–4 proven styles + one hero colour or top-and-bottom combination your audience will recognise as "yours".

A new brand founder 4–6 proven styles with a defined colour palette and fit group that set your brand identity.

Why Sell Other Brands When You Could Sell Your Own?

Final Thought

A good MOQ for a new swimwear brand isn't the lowest number possible; it's the number that lets you launch properly and sell through. For most new brands, that means 100 pieces per style per colour and 4–6 styles in total, with one colour each to start.

And remember: your brand doesn't have to begin with ten new inventions. Start with styles that already work, make them yours through colour, combination and branding, and let your customers show you the way. That's how strong brands are built, one season at a time.
