Low MOQ Swimwear Manufacturers: What "Low Minimum" Really Means

If you're searching for a low MOQ swimwear manufacturer, you've probably already seen the phrase on dozens of websites. "Low minimums." "Small orders welcome." "MOQ from 50 pieces." Then the quote arrives, and the real number is 300, 600 or 1,000 pieces. Nobody lied, exactly. The minimum was simply counted in a different way from the one you assumed.

This guide is for independent brand founders and boutique owners in Europe and the US who are planning a first order of a few hundred pieces. It explains how swimwear minimums are actually counted, why they differ so much between factories, and which questions to ask before you compare two quotes. We make bikinis and swimsuits in Istanbul from 100 pieces per model per colour, so we'll show our own numbers too.

What Does "Low MOQ" Mean at a Swimwear Manufacturer?

MOQ stands for minimum order quantity. The number itself tells you very little until you know what it counts. In swimwear, there are four common ways to count it, and the same headline number can lead to very different orders:

The MOQ is counted per… "100 pieces" means… Your real order for 3 styles × 2 colours

Order 100 pieces in total, any mix 100 pieces

Style 100 pieces of each style, colours mixed 300 pieces

Style per colour 100 pieces of each style in each colour 600 pieces

Style per colour per size 100 pieces of every size 3,000 pieces (5 sizes)

The last row is not a joke. Some factories quote per size because each size is cut as a separate lay. A brand that reads "MOQ 100" and plans 600 pieces can end up being asked for 3,000.

There is one more thing to check with bikinis: is a "style" the set, or each part? Our own rule is the third row, counted per part: 100 pieces per model per colour, where every bikini top and every bikini bottom is a model of its own. So 100 bikini sets in one colour means 100 tops and 100 bottoms: 200 pieces. A swimsuit is one model, so 100 swimsuits are 100 pieces.

Counting per part also works in your favour. Tops and bottoms don't need to be ordered in the same quantity, and one bottom can be paired with more than one top. Sizes XS–XL are mixed freely inside each 100: you can order 40 pieces of one size and 10 of another, or even a single size if your shop only sells mediums.

Why Do Low MOQ Swimwear Manufacturers Quote Such Different Numbers?

A minimum is not a sales tactic. It's the point below which an order stops covering its own fixed costs. In swimwear, three of those costs decide the number:

  • Fabric. Mills dye swim fabric in lots, and a dye lot is often several hundred metres per colour. A 100-piece bikini order uses only a fraction of that. If the factory has to order fabric for your colour, the mill's minimum becomes your minimum.
  • Pattern and set-up. A new style needs a pattern, grading across sizes, a sample and a cutting plan. Spread over 1,000 pieces, that cost disappears. Spread over 100, it can double the price of each piece.
  • Line time. Every new style means re-threading machines, briefing sewers and checking the first pieces. A factory built for long runs loses money each time it switches.

So when a supplier offers a very low minimum, it's worth asking how they solved these three problems. There are usually only three answers: they sell blanks they already have in stock, they add a surcharge to small orders, or they've built the business around ready patterns and standing fabric. Only the last one gives you both a low minimum and a fair unit price.

Six Conditions That Can Hide Behind a Low Minimum

Before you compare quotes, check whether any of these sit behind the headline number:

  • 01 Stock designs only. The low MOQ applies to the factory's own blanks; your own design starts at 500 or more.
  • 02 One colour, or one print. The minimum is per colour, so a three-colour drop triples the order. Prints often carry a separate, higher minimum.
  • 03 A small-order surcharge. The minimum is low, but the price per piece is often 20–40% higher below a certain quantity.
  • 04 Separate minimums for trims. Woven labels, hang tags and printed packaging often have minimums of their own, sometimes 500–1,000 pieces.

Fees outside the quote.

How Much Does It Cost to Manufacture Swimwear?

  • 06 A different reorder minimum. The first order is accepted at 100, but reorders must be 300 because the fabric has to be bought again.

None of these is wrong in itself. The problem is finding out after you've already planned your launch around the wrong number.

How Does a Small Batch Swimwear Manufacturer Make 100 Pieces Work?

A small batch swimwear manufacturer has to remove the fixed costs above, not just accept small orders. At Istanbul Swimwear Studio, this is how it works in practice:

Twelve ready-developed models (our Ready-to-Brand route).

Collection

  • Standing fabric. Matte, shiny and neon solids in polyamide, kept in stock, plus a selection of ready prints. Prints follow the same rule: 100 pieces per model per print.
  • No small-order surcharge. Prices are fixed per model, from €14 to €23 per piece FOB Istanbul. Bikini tops and bottoms are priced separately, so a bikini set costs the top price plus the bottom price. Cups, where you want them, are €1.00 extra per piece.

Your brand on every piece.

private label swimwear manufacturing

  • Samples before you commit. We send an original sample of each model and colour (in one size) within about a week of payment. Samples are invoiced at 1.5 times the unit price, plus courier.

Here is what that means for a real first order. Say you choose two bikinis, each in one colour, and one swimsuit in black:

Line Models Pieces

Bikini A (top + bottom), one colour 2 200 (100 sets)

Bikini B (top + bottom), one colour 2 200 (100 sets)

Swimsuit, black 1 100

Total order 5 500 pieces: 200 bikini sets and 100 swimsuits, sizes mixed freely

Production takes 4–6 weeks from your 50% deposit, and the balance is due before shipment. For context, 100 swimsuits at €23 come to €2,300 FOB. A 100-bikini order fits into one 60 × 30 × 40 cm carton, so it ships like a parcel, not a container.

Questions to Ask Any Swimwear Manufacturer for Small Brands

Send these questions with your first inquiry. A good swimwear manufacturer for small brands will answer all of them in one reply.

Question Why it matters Our answer

Is the MOQ per order, style, colour or size? Decides your real order size Per model per colour

For bikinis, is the MOQ per set or per part? Decides whether 100 sets count as 100 pieces or 200 Per part: 100 tops and 100 bottoms make 100 sets

Can I mix sizes within the minimum? Avoids dead stock in sizes you don't sell Yes, freely, XS–XL, in one fit group per order

Does the price change below a certain quantity? Reveals small-order surcharges No, fixed per model

Is the fabric in stock, or bought for my order? Decides reorder speed and reorder minimum Core colours in continuous stock; reorders from 100 pieces too

What do samples cost and how long do they take?

Your first real test of the supplier

Are labels and packaging included? Trims can carry their own minimums Yes, under your brand

Is the Lowest MOQ Always the Best Choice?

Not always. A minimum of 30 pieces sounds safer, but 30 pieces across five sizes is six per size. That's often too few to sell well, too few for a proper photo shoot, and too few to learn which size really sells. In our experience, 100 pieces per model is where a first order becomes a real test of the market.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a low MOQ for swimwear?

For a manufacturer making your branded product, 100 to 300 pieces per style is generally considered low; many factories start at 500 to 1,000. At Istanbul Swimwear Studio the minimum is 100 pieces per model per colour.

Is the MOQ per style or per colour?

It depends on the manufacturer, so always ask. Ours is per model per colour, and each bikini top and bottom is a separate model. One bikini in two colours therefore means 100 tops and 100 bottoms in each colour: 400 pieces, or 200 sets.

Can I mix sizes within a 100-piece order?

Yes. Sizes XS–XL can be mixed freely within the 100 pieces, and ordering a single size is also possible. You choose one fit group for the whole order.

Do small orders cost more per piece?

Many manufacturers add a surcharge below a set quantity. Our ready-to-brand prices are fixed per model, from €14 to €23 per piece FOB Istanbul, with no small-order surcharge. Bikini tops and bottoms are priced separately, and cups are €1.00 extra per piece.

Is the minimum the same for printed swimwear and my own designs?

Yes. Ready prints are 100 pieces per model per print, and our Own Design service is 100 pieces per style per colour, plus a €500 development fee per style.
