Istanbul vs China Low MOQ Swimwear Manufacturing: Cost, Lead Time & Quality Comparison

If you're looking for a swimwear manufacturer in Turkey and wondering how it compares with China, you're probably about to place a first order of 100 to 500 pieces. For a boutique owner or a new brand founder, this is usually the first real sourcing decision. Chinese quotes often look cheaper on paper. Turkish quotes often look more expensive. But the price per piece is only one line in a much longer calculation.
We make bikinis and swimsuits in Istanbul for independent brands, so we're obviously not neutral. That's exactly why this comparison tries to be fair: it shows where Istanbul wins, where China wins, and how to work out which one fits your order.
Istanbul, Turkey China
Typical unit price Higher (our range: €14–23 FOB) Usually lower
Import duty into the EU 0% with an A.TR certificate 8–12% depending on the CN code
Transit time to Europe 1–3 days by express courier, about a week by road 30–45 days by sea, or expensive air freight
Sample to your desk About a week after payment Often 2–3 weeks, including transit
Time zone vs. Central Europe 1–2 hours ahead 6–7 hours ahead
Reorder in season Realistic Usually too late by sea
Best for Small runs, fast reorders, EU/US boutiques Large volumes, price-led basics
If your order is small and your selling season is short, Istanbul tends to come out ahead. If you're ordering thousands of pieces per style months in advance, China's price advantage starts to matter more.
The number on the quote is the FOB price: what the goods cost when they leave the factory. What you actually pay is the landed cost: FOB plus freight, import duty and the cost of the time your money is tied up.
Here is an illustrative example for 100 swimsuits shipped to Germany. The Chinese figures are a typical scenario, not a quote from a specific factory.
Per piece Istanbul China (illustrative)
FOB price €23.00 (our swimsuit) €15.00
Freight to the EU ≈ €1.00 (courier, one carton) ≈ €2.00 (air) or less by sea, but 5–6 weeks slower
EU import duty €0 (A.TR) ≈ €2.00 (12% on goods + freight)
Landed cost ≈ €24 ≈ €19
So yes, China can still be cheaper per piece. The question is what you get, or lose, for that €5 difference. On 100 pieces, it's about €500. One missed selling window, one extra sample round shipped across continents, or one reorder that arrives in September instead of June costs a small brand far more than that.
How Much Does It Cost to Manufacture Swimwear?
At Istanbul Swimwear Studio, production takes 4–6 weeks from the day we receive the 50% deposit. After that, an express courier reaches most European cities in 1–3 days. A 100-bikini order fits into a single 60 × 30 × 40 cm carton, so it travels like a parcel, not like a container.
With a Chinese factory, production time is often similar, but sea freight to Europe adds roughly 30–45 days, plus port handling. Air freight closes the gap but quickly eats the price advantage on a small order.
What this means on a calendar: an order confirmed in early February in Istanbul can be on your rail by mid-March. The same order shipped by sea from China arrives in late April or May, when your customers are already shopping.
This is where proximity matters most. Your first order teaches you which style and colour your customers love. When that bikini sells out in May, a reorder from Istanbul can arrive while the season is still running. A reorder shipped by sea from Asia usually arrives after it.
Many suppliers in both countries advertise low minimums, so read the small print. A low MOQ can apply only to stock designs, only to one colour, or come with a surcharge per piece. Some quotes count the minimum per style, others per style per colour, which can double or triple your real order.
What Is a Good MOQ for a New Swimwear Brand?
Proximity and oversight. Istanbul is a 3–4 hour flight from most European capitals. You can visit the workshop, see your fabric and meet the people sewing your order. Samples reach you in days, not weeks.
Same working day. Istanbul is 1–2 hours ahead of Central Europe. A question sent in the morning is usually answered the same morning, not the next day.
Certified fabric close to home.
Quality control on small runs. Every order is inspected to AQL 2.5, including 100-piece orders. If something is short or faulty on our side, we re-send or refund it.
A garment ecosystem built for European brands. Istanbul has supplied European fashion retailers for decades. Fabric mills, trim suppliers and experienced swimwear sewers are all within the same city, which is what makes small, fast runs possible.
Yes, you can usually buy for less in China. But price isn't the whole story. One of our customers had a ten-style collection: seven styles were made in China, three with us in Istanbul. By the time the Chinese goods had been shipped and cleared through customs, it was already mid-season. The brand nearly missed its summer, and there was no time left for a single repeat order on those seven styles. The three styles we made arrived on time, sold well, and we produced two repeat orders of them on top of the original order. In a short swimwear season, the reorder is often where the real profit is, and you can only reorder from a manufacturer close enough to deliver in time.
To be fair, there are orders where we would point you elsewhere:
For 100 to 500 pieces, a short season and the need to reorder quickly, a swimwear manufacturer in Turkey is usually the safer bet.
Our FOB prices and lead times are the same for US customers. US import duties on apparel from both Turkey and China have changed several times since 2025, so check the current rate for your HTS code with your customs broker before you compare quotes. Courier transit from Istanbul to the US East Coast typically takes 2–4 business days.
Per piece, China is usually cheaper. Once freight, EU import duty (0% from Turkey with an A.TR certificate, 8–12% from China) and lead time are included, the gap on a 100–500 piece order is often small: in our example, about €5 per swimsuit.
100 pieces per style per colour, with sizes XS–XL mixed freely. Prices run from €14 to €23 per piece, FOB Istanbul.
With us, 4–6 weeks from the day the 50% deposit is received. Samples are sent within about a week of payment, and express courier delivery to most of Europe takes 1–3 days.
For EU buyers, goods of Turkish origin travel under the EU–Turkey Customs Union and are duty-free with an A.TR movement certificate. Import VAT still applies. Customs clearance, courier and freight are on the buyer's account.
